New Rehabilitation Room Means
More
Services Close to
Home |
BOOTHBAY HARBOR – Equipped with a
stove, sink and a bathroom, the new St.
Andrews Hospital and
Healthcare Center Rehabilitation Room looks a lot like
home. The room is designed
to help people who are recovering from surgery, a
stroke, heart attack or other debilitating medical
condition regain their ability to accomplish daily
activities so they can return home safely.
“The rehabilitation room allows us to
work toward our goal of helping people to maintain
independence with self-care and engagement in valued
life activities, preserving a sense of satisfaction and
quality of life,” said Jim Stevens, Manager of
Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy at St. Andrews .
St.
Andrews physical, occupational and speech
therapists work with doctors, nurses, dieticians and
cardiopulmonary therapists to help patients reach their
maximum potential. The new room allows
people from the Boothbay area to receive an expanded
range of therapy services in their home community,
avoiding the expense and inconvenience of long
commutes. Others services provided by
St. Andrews include
skilled and acute inpatient rehabilitation, aquatic
rehabilitation, pediatric services and rehabilitation at
home. Providing a full range of
rehabilitation services is increasingly important as
people live longer, surviving serious medical problems
such as a stroke or heart attack
The bathroom in the new
rehabilitation room allows patients to rehearse getting
in and out of the shower or bath, a frequent site of
injuries. The stove allows patients to relearn cooking
and practice new strategies to help them safely
accomplish familiar tasks in new ways.
“This new space will help our
community by providing patients with an environment to
practice daily activities similar to their home
environment.
With this new facility, our
rehabilitation team of nurses, doctors and therapists
can better prepare our patients and their families for a
safe, smooth transition back to their home environment,”
said Stevensies so they can return home
safely.
