 Peter W. Bates, MD

Peter W. Bates, M.D.
Dr. Peter Bates serves as Maine Medical Center's Senior Vice President, Medical and Academic Affairs/Chief Medical Officer and Academic Dean for the Maine Medical Center - Tufts University School of Medicine Medical School Program. Dr. Bates has oversight for all clinical, medical management, academic, research, education, and programmatic aspects of health care delivery, and serves as the primary liaison between MMC management and the private physician practice community. He is also a key member of the senior management team and participates in all strategic and operational decisions and policy as a senior corporate officer of Maine Medical Center. Prior to this role, Dr. Bates served as the hospital's Chief of Medicine for nine years.

Bill Burke

Vice Chairman
Bill Burke is an experienced media executive who held various positions at Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner, including president of TBS Super Station and general manager of Turner Classic Movies. He also served as president and CEO of The Weather Channel Companies. Bill also co-authored Call Me Ted, the autobiography of Ted Turner. He is a graduate of Amherst College and received his MBA from the Harvard Business School. In addition to being a trustee at Maine Medical Center, Bill is Chairman of the Portland Sea Dogs and the US Biathlon Association, a Director of Simulmedia, Inc., and serves on the advisory board of Specific Media, Inc.

  
Margaret Bush

Margaret Molster Bush
Margaret Bush was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, where she attended St. Catherine's School and the University of Virginia. She met her future husband, Marvin, at the University and they were married after graduation in 1981. Bush spent 13 years as a teacher, the first at The Park School in Brookline, Mass, then 12 years in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1995, Margaret made a career change and has become an actress on stage, in film, and on television. In addition, she also has a floral design business. She has served on numerous boards, including The National Children's Museum, Prevent Cancer Foundation, St. Catherine's Alumnae, and Very Special Arts. For many years, Margaret has spoken on behalf of The Gladney Center, the adoption agency where her children were born. Margaret has a passion for pediatric patients and has visited and read to patients at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center, named for her mother-in-law.

 
 William L. Caron William L. Caron
William L. Caron is President and Chief Executive Officer of MaineHealth. Prior to his current position, Bill was Executive Vice President and Treasurer at MaineHealth, as well as Vice President and Treasurer at Maine Medical Center. He previously was a Partner with Ernst & Young and headed the East Region health care consulting practice in Philadelphia. Bill is a long-time member of the Portland Community Chamber of Commerce and the Regional Chamber, and has held several officer positions with the Portland Community Chamber, including President. He was active with the Greater Portland United Way, serving on its Board from 2004 - 2010 and as Annual Campaign Chair in 2005. The organization honored him with its Legacy Award in 2009.
 
Christopher Claudio

Christopher Claudio 
Christopher Claudio is co-founder and CEO of Winxnet, a national leader in IT consulting, outsourcing and software development with a particular expertise in Health Informatics.  Chris started Winxnet in 1999 and has helped guide the company to provide strategic IT direction for hundreds of organizations including medical practices and hospitals throughout the country.  Prior to Winxnet, Chris held roles as Senior Technical Architect and Systems Engineer for Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), servicing General Dynamics’ global technology infrastructure. Chris has since launched several technology ventures and now focuses on IT governance and compliance, strategic planning, and organizational excellence in the delivery and management of IT.

Chris holds multiple technical and engineering certifications from Microsoft, Cisco and Citrix.  He is a prestigious badged Microsoft engineer assisting in strategic customer engagements around the country.  A believer in active community involvement, Chris serves on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters (Chair - Corporate Partnership Committee), been a United Way volunteer and is an active member of his local community in Yarmouth, ME where he lives with his wife Alyson and their two children, Emerson and Dalton.

 
 Katherine B. Coster

Katherine B. Coster
Kathy has experience as a board member for both profit and non-profit institutions. She joined the board of Gorham Savings Bank in 2011 and serves on the Risk Management, Audit, and Administration Committees. Kathy is on the board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine and serves as its Vice President, while also chairing the College Club of Maine and has served on the Dartmouth Alumni Council and co-chaired the twenty fifth and thirtieth reunion fundraising campaigns. Kathy is also a member of the Parochial Council of the Parish of the Holy Eucharist. Her past affiliations include serving as the President of the Falmouth Education Foundation and as a board member of the Children's Museum and Theater of Maine, the Bishops Appeal Committee for the Diocese of Portland, and the Falmouth Memorial Library.

Professionally, Kathy was a commercial banker working in New York City, California, and Boston. Kathy is a graduate of Dartmouth College.

 
Christopher Emmons Chris Emmons
Chris Emmons is the President and CEO of Gorham Savings Bank. The Massachusetts native graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, and began his banking career at Maine National Bank in 1977. After stops at BayBank and TD Banknorth, he joined Gorham Savings Bank in 2003. A strong community supporter, Chris is involved with the Maine Bankers Association as well as several local non-profit organizations. He has served as past Chair of the Maine Medical Center Board of Trustees, University of Southern Maine Foundation and the United Way of Greater Portland.  He presently serves as Vice Chair of the University of Maine Board of Visitors and is a Trustee of Maine Medical Center and MaineHealth. Chris was selected as a 2007 laureate and inducted into the Maine Business Hall of Fame.

 Morris Fisher

Morris Fisher is President, CBRE/Boulos Asset Management. His experience includes real estate development, operations, leasing, and finance. In addition to providing strategic real estate advice to clients, he is responsible for directing a property management company with 50 employees and real estate projects under management totaling 4,000,000 square feet of commercial space. His experience includes the development, marketing, leasing, and sale of major retail, office, and industrial properties in both downtown and suburban locations. Morris is a Trustee of MMC and is a former Officer and Board Member of The Park Danforth, Portland Public Library, Catholic Charities of Maine and Portland’s Downtown District.  Prior to joining CBRE|Boulos Asset Management, Morris was a senior accountant with KPMG Peat Marwick.

 Robert F. Frank

Robert Frank has served as deputy general counsel for MaineHealth since July 2009. In that capacity, he has provided legal advice in connection with strategic initiatives and acquisitions, competition laws compliance, payor contracting, data security and breach matters, risk management and insurance, federal and state healthcare provider licensing, and has overseen professional liability, regulatory and business litigation and dispute resolution matters. Prior to his work at MaineHealth, he was an associate at the Morrison & Forester law firm in San Francisco (1979-82); an assistant attorney general at the Maine Department of Attorney General (1982-1987); an associate and then partner in the law firm Verrill Dana (1987-1995), and a founding member and partner of Harvey & Frank (1995-2009).  While in private law practice, he represented various hospitals, physician practices and health insurance carriers, the Maine Hospital Association, and on special assignment to the American Hospital Association in connection with the drafting of federal antitrust and health care guidelines.  He also served as a visiting lecturer of antitrust law for three terms at The University of Maine Law School (1997-1990), and currently serves as a panel member on the Grievance Commission of the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar.

Bob is a graduate of Emory University (B.A. Physics), and Yale Law School (J.D.)   He is a member of the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, and a past board member, treasurer and founder. He also served as treasurer and board member of the LARK Society for Chamber Music, and a board member of Young Peoples' Theater in Brunswick.

Frank H. Frye, an attorney, is "Of Counsel" to the law firm of Jensen Baird Gardner & Henry. Frank practices in the areas of Corporate, Business and Tax/Estate Planning Law, and specializes in serving closely-held business entities and non-profit organizations. Before joining the firm, he served as Attorney and Assistant Branch Chief, Interpretative Division in the Office of the Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service, Washington D.C., and practiced with a large law firm in New York City. He has been selected for inclusion in the latest edition of The Best Lawyers in America for Corporate Law and New England Super Lawyers for Business/Corporate and Tax. His community work includes serving on the Maine Medical Center Board of Trustees. He has been selected for inclusion in the latest edition of The Best Lawyers in America for Corporate Law and New England Super Lawyers for Business/Corporate and Tax, and  is a past Chair of the Maine State Bar Association Tax Section.  His charitable and civic  work  included service on the Town of Scarborough Planning Board, and as aTrustee of the  Portland, Maine  chapter of the American Red Cross and  Opportunity Farm for Boys and Girls. Frank currently  serves on the Board of Directors of  Down East Magazine, the magazine of Maine.

 
Heidi N. Hansen

Heidi N. Hansen
Heidi Hansen has been a Trustee of Maine Medical Center since 1998 and is currently Chair of the Board Performance Improvement/Quality & Safety Committee.  She chaired the Board Education & Research Committee from 2003-2008 and is a former member of the MMC Clinical Ethics Committee.  Heidi was a Trustee of MaineHealth in 2009 and currently serves as Chair of the MaineHealth Audit Committee.  Her relationship with MMC began as a weekly evening volunteer in the Emergency Department from 1981 – 1997.

A graduate of Colby College, Heidi founded in 1981 and operated Letterworks International, a database marketing services firm, through its sale in 1995. In 1999, she was a founder of BlueTarp Financial, which provides innovative information and financial services to the building material industry.  Since 2004, she has operated HN Hansen & Co., a business consulting firm specializing in product development, project management, and innovation/new market entry.

Heidi has served on numerous business and non-profit boards, including Portland Ovations, Portland Museum of Art, Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, Compass Project, Ingraham, and the Portland Chamber of Commerce. Her honors include YWCA Tribute to Women in Industry and the Ad Club of Maine’s Conwell Award.  She has traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas and loves sailing the coast of Maine.

 
 Costas Lambrew, MD Costas T. Lambrew, M.D.
Dr. Costas Lambrew held many positions during his tenure at Maine Medical Center, including Associate Vice President for Medical Education, Vice President for Health Affairs, Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and Coordinator for Medical Education, Director of the Division of Cardiology and the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, as well as Interim Director of the Clinical Trials Division of Maine Medical Center's Research Institute. A graduate of Wesleyan University, he attended Cornell University Medical College. Dr. Lambrew was an Intern and Assistant Resident in Medicine, as well as a Fellow in Cardiology at The New York Hospital, where he later became Chief Resident Physician and Assistant Director of Cardiology. A highly-regarded caregiver, Dr. Lambrew came to Maine in 1977 as a Physician Educator in Emergency Medicine for Maine Medical Center and the State of Maine Emergency Medical Services Project. Dr. Lambrew's list of academic appointments includes Cornell University Medical College, the School of Medicine, Health Sciences Center of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, University of Southern Maine, and the University of Vermont.
Jack F. McGarry

Jack F. McGarry
Jack McGarry is the President & CEO of Unum’s Closed Block Operations. He is responsible for all aspects of the Closed Block of business including strategy formation, operational execution, and financial results.

Jack returned to Unum’s US Operations in September 2012 following a two year appointment as CEO of Unum’s UK operations. As CEO, Jack was responsible for shaping and influencing the future development of the company and ensuring that it delivered on its strategic objectives.

Jack joined Unum US in May 1986 in the Individual Life Division.  He held various financial roles including Chief Finance Officer for the Life, Health & Retirement Products Division.  In 1992, he became Vice President of Underwriting and Risk Management for Unum’s Long Term Disability Division.  He also headed Unum’s National Accounts Sales organization and Unum’s Long Term Disability Product Center. Prior to his move to the UK, Jack was Senior Vice President of Unum’s US Risk Management Organization (RMO). As the head of RMO, he oversaw claims management activities for Unum’s US Operations. He had executive responsibility for the Individual Disability and National Client Group Strategic Business units and managed the Corporate Development efforts for Unum US businesses.

Jack is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Vermont in 1980 with a BS in Mathematics.

Jack currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Maine Medical Center and AHIP (America’s Health Insurance Plans). He previously served on the Board of Directors for the United Way of York County and the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement.

He has two grown sons and lives in Hollis, Maine with his wife, Sally. He enjoys biking, golfing and bluegrass music.

 

 Jere Michelson

Jere Michelson is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Libra Foundation, with oversight responsibility for all financial aspects of the Foundation's interests. Prior to joining Libra Foundation, Mr. Michelson was a member of the management group at the accounting firm of Baker Newman Noyes, LLC in Portland where he consulted primarily on closely-held corporations and shareholders with multi-state operations in that firm's corporate tax department. In 2001, he left public accounting to join Libra Foundation in its pursuit for the betterment of Maine's citizenry. Mr. Michelson chairs the Finance Committee of MMC's Board and is also a member of the Executive Committee. He also sits on the Audit Committee at MaineHealth, the parent organization of MMC. Through appointment from Senator Susan Collins, Mr. Michelson serves on the Military Service Academy Selection Committee. He received his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Southern Maine in Portland and his master's degree in taxation from Thomas College in Waterville. Mr. Michelson serves on the boards of Pineland Farms Natural Meats, Inc., Pineland Farms Potato Company, Inc. and Scarborough Little League. Additionally, he is very active in coaching youth sports.

Richard W. Petersen is President and Chief Executive Officer of Maine Medical Center. Prior to his appointment, Rich served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at MMC for nine years. Before joining Maine Medical Center, Rich served as Senior Vice President for Kaleida Health Systems located in Buffalo, New York, an l,600-bed system with a $1 billion annual budget. Rich currently serves as a Board member on The Foundation for Maine's Community Colleges, The John T. Gorman Foundation, and Cheverus High School where he serves as the Board Chair. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
 
 Katherine Stoddard Pope, MD

Katherine Pope, M.D., is an Anesthesiologist with Spectrum Medical Group, a large multi-specialty private practice serving several hospitals and healthcare facilities in Maine.  Dr. Pope currently practices primarily at Maine Medical Center, but also has attending staff experience with Southern Maine Medical Center, Orthopaedic Associates Surgery Center, Portland Endoscopy Center, and Hospice of Southern Maine. She received her undergraduate degree from Colby College with a major in English, her medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and her residency training in anesthesiology with a subspecialty focus on pediatric anesthesia at Maine Medical Center. 

Although her professional training is in the field of anesthesiology, Dr. Pope has a strong interest in palliative and hospice care, and was a co-founder of Hospice of Southern Maine, and chaired its Board for several years.  Dr. Pope has had a long-standing interest in international medical service, and over the past 15 years has volunteered on a number of international medical mission trips to serve the indigent in developing countries, including to Ecuador, China, Haiti, Vietnam, and Mali.

Dr. Pope is also actively involved in other community organizations, currently serving on several other non-profit boards, including Maine Cancer Foundation, Maine Historical Society and Audubon Alaska.   In the past, she served on the Board and as Chair of the Legislative Committee of the Maine Medical Association.  Dr. Pope also currently serves on the corporate board of Medical Mutual Insurance Company of Maine. Honors and awards include the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, Alumni Award for Service to Medicine and Community from UVM, Home Care Advocate of the Year Award from the Home Care and Hospice Alliance of Maine, the Champion award from the Alzheimer's Association of Maine, and induction into the Deborah Morton Society from University of New England.

 

 
Reed Quinn, MD Reed Quinn, M.D.
Reed Quinn, M.D., is Associate Director, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at MMC. Dr. Quinn attended medical school at the University of Utah and completed postdoctoral training at University of Rochester, The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania, and Children's Hospital in Boston. He has been an attending surgeon at MMC since 1994, and holds an appointment at five other medical centers. He also serves as Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery, University of Vermont College of Medicine and the Maine Medical Center-Tufts University School of Medicine Medical School Program. A member of MMC's Board of Trustees, his numerous awards and honors include The American Red Cross Outstanding Medical Provider Award, CBS-TV's Person of the Week, and the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America. Dr. Quinn has traveled to China to perform free surgical services and train doctors there.
 
 Jeffrey D. Sanders Jeffrey D. Sanders
Jeff Sanders is MMC's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, responsible for day-to-day operations of the hospital. He serves as a key strategic advisor to the President and CEO, other senior executives, and physician leaders. Jeff plays a critical role in the effective collaboration and integration with physicians, developing strong relationships and initiatives aimed at strengthening market presence and integrating services and practice sites. Before joining MMC, Jeff was the operating officer at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, where he oversaw cardiovascular services, imaging services, sleep services, hyperbaric medicine, surgical services, transplant services, and medical research. Prior to his role at the flagship of Intermountain Healthcare, he was at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah, in charge of a number of programs including surgery, critical care, rehabilitation, laboratory services, information systems, and behavioral medicine. Jeff also played a key role in Intermountain Healthcare's partnership with GE Healthcare, leading numerous projects as part of the development of an integrated electronic medical record.
 
Beth Shorr

Elizabeth O. Shorr
Beth Shorr is the President of The Foundation for Maine's Community Colleges, a position she has held since January 2010. She previously served as Vice Chancellor, University Advancement, at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, as well as President, University of Southern Maine Foundation, and Vice President of University Advancement of the University of Southern Maine. Shorr spent the first part of her career in the health insurance industry and served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Relations for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine, where she was responsible for public affairs, marketing, and brand management and community relations. Shorr sits on the board of Cumberland Club and is a member of the MaineHealth ACO Committee. She is also a Corporator of MaineHealth and is a member and past president of the Maine Women's Forum. Shorr is past chair of the board of United Way of Greater Portland and the board of trustees of the Maine Technical College System. Her honors include YWCA Tribute to Women in Industry, Leadership Award, New England Council, and University of New England Deborah Morton Award.

Patricia Stogsdill, MD Patricia Stogsdill, M.D.
Dr. Patricia Stogsdill specializes in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease, and is the Co-Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Maine Medical Center. Dr. Stogsdill is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Maine Medical Center – Tufts University School of Medicine Medical School Program, and previously held the same position at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. She is the Vice-Chair of the Performance Improvement Committee at MMC and also sits on the Maine Health Board Quality Committee. She holds membership in the American College of Physicians, American Society of Microbiologists, Northern New England Infections Disease Society, and is a Fellow in the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Dr. Stogsdill has been honored with a Best Maine Doctors Award, as well as a Physician Award for Best Practice in Customer Satisfaction and Preventative Health. Her abstracts, publications, and presentations have ranged from the use of antibiotics to emerging antimicrobial resistance. Dr. Stogsdill completed her undergraduate work at the University of Vermont in the Physical Therapy program, attended the Physician Associate Program at Yale University, and then returned to the University of Vermont for her Medical degree. Her residency and fellowship were both at MMC.
Susannah Swihart Susannah Swihart
Susannah Swihart spent two decades at BankBoston Corporation in a wide variety of leadership, operational, and strategic roles, including Vice Chairman and CFO. Previous responsibilities at BankBoston included management of a variety of corporate banking businesses, operations, and risk functions. During that period, Susannah was a member of the executive committee of the board of trustees of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston,  ran BankBoston's $3+ million United Way campaign in 1998, and later chaired the $1 million Women's Leadership Breakfast for the United Way of Massachusetts Bay. Since returning to Maine in 2000, she has committed her efforts to a variety of corporate and community boards. In addition to MMC's Board of Trustees, Susannah serves on the boards of directors of the Dead River Company and MaineHealth and is the former board chair of  Common Good Ventures and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine. Susannah is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School.
 
David Wennberg, MD, MPH

David Wennberg, M.D., MPH
Prior to his work with the Northern New England Accountable Care Collaborative, Dr. Wennberg co-founded Health Dialog Analytic Solutions, the analytic division of Health Dialog and served as Health Dialog’s Chief Science Officer for a number of years.

Dr. Wennberg is a current faculty member at The Dartmouth Institute and is an internationally recognized authority on the root causes of unwarranted variation.  His work has been published in many peer-reviewed medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA and the Annals of Medicine.

Dr. Wennberg currently serves as the CEO of the Northern New England Accountable Care Collaborative (NNEACC).  Formed by Dartmouth-Hitchcock, , Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, MaineHealth and Dartmouth College,  NNEAC creates common financing and accountability models and provides a common infrastructure to support the delivery of value-based accountable care.

 
 Marjorie S. Wiggins, RN, MBA, DNP, NEA-BC Marjorie S. Wiggins, R.N.F, MBA, DNP, NEA-BC
Marge Wiggins is Vice President of Nursing & Chief Nursing Executive of MMC, as well as Chief Nurse Executive of MaineHealth. An Adjunct Faculty in USM's School of Nursing, Marge has published numerous articles and several book chapters on care delivery models. She led MMC's development of the evidencebased Partnership Care Delivery Model, and consulted in the US and abroad on the topic. She served on several committees for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's efforts to implement the Clinical Nurse Leader role and delivered nearly 40 presentations in 14 states. Marge maintains membership in several professional organizations, including American Organization of Nurse Executives, Organization of Maine Nurse Executives, Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science-Eastern Nurses Research Society, and the Clinical Nurse Leader Association.
 James Zeitlin, MD, MPH James Zeitlin, M.D., MPH
James H. Zeitlin is the current President of the Medical Staff at Maine Medical Center, Maine’s leading tertiary care, academic and research-based hospital. Dr. Zeitlin is a specialist in Internal Medicine and was named President-Elect by his colleagues in 2009, and President in the fall of 2012.

As President-Elect, Dr. Zeitlin served as the Chair of the Credentials Committee and was a member of the hospital’s Finance Committee and the Medical Executive Committee. As President of the Medical Staff, he is involved in credentialing and privileging, regulatory compliance, Bylaws and policy development, and represents the Medical Staff to the Board of Trustees. He is also responsible for program development for orientation of new medical staff members, professional ethics, and promoting the MMC Medical Staff professional conduct policy and the compact between MMC and its Medical Staff. A major focus of his position is to assist the Medical Center in achieving its mission and vision. His role as President also includes serving as Chair of the Medical Executive Committee, and serving on the Board of Trustees of the Medical Center.

Dr. Zeitlin is active in clinical teaching and patient care at the Medical Center; he is Board certified in Internal Medicine and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Zeitlin also serves on the Board of Directors at InterMed, PA, where he practices Internal Medicine and conducts clinical research. Dr. Zeitlin has also served our community as an elected official on the Board of Directors of Ingraham (now known as Opportunity Alliance).

Dr. Zeitlin earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He earned his Medical Degree and Master’s in Public Health concurrently from Tufts University School of Medicine. His post-graduate residency training was completed at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado; he later served as Chair of the Department of Medicine at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Upon completing his military service in 1996, Dr. Zeitlin moved to Portland, Maine, with his family.
