Anesthesiology

Maine Medical Center was founded in 1951 from an amalgamation of the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary, and the Maine General Hospital. Three years later, in 1954, the first class of Anesthesiology residents was accepted. Today, Maine Medical Center has a referral base of over one million people and is the largest medical center and teaching hospital in northern New England. With over 600 beds, Maine Medical Center is a regional leader for open heart surgery, kidney transplantation, pediatric surgery, obstetrics, neurosurgery, and is a
Level I Trauma Center.

Maine Medical Center is a major teaching affiliate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and offers residency training programs in all of the major medical specialties.

Anesthesiology is a specialty that requires the daily application of the principles of pharmacology and physiology in the care of patients. It is also a specialty that requires a high degree of technical expertise. Our training program seeks to provide both the knowledge and clinical experience necessary to produce a consultant in anesthesiology who has the maturity of judgement, clinical skills, and self confidence to be a leader of the anesthesia care team.

Residents from Maine Medical Center leave our program with the clinical proficiency and confidence to go on to both academic and private practice opportunities. One of the most important attributes a program can impart to a resident is the feeling that he or she is familiar with the principles and specifics of any given case or problem set. We seek to allow our residents the autonomy necessary to develop problem-solving skills, along with the support and didactic training they require to create solutions to new problems. The Anesthesiology Program at Maine Medical Center provides a complete experience in all forms of invasive monitoring, general and regional anesthetics, didactic training, and clinical research.
